Webmaster Tips and Tricks

CSS Short-Hand Properties

Often your CSS may include many properties that can be combined making your CSS much shorter and neater. The most common CSS properties that can be combined are Font, Margin/Padding, Background and Border.
When using short-hand CSS, the properties must be put into a specific order for your web browser to read them. See examples below.

Font Property

{font-style: oblique; font-weight: bold; font-size: 16px; font-family: Helvetica, Arial, Sans-Serif;}
{font: oblique bold 16px Helvetica, Arial, Sans-Serif;}

Margin/Padding Properties

{margin-top: 5px; margin-right: 10px; margin-bottom: 20px; margin-left: 15px;}
{margin: 5px 10px 20px 15px;}

Note: the short-hand CSS for padding works the same as margin, just replace margin with padding.You can take this short-hand CSS one step further, if your top and bottom have the same margin and the left and right have the same margin you can code it like this:

{margin-top: 10px; margin-right: 30px; margin-bottom: 10px; margin-left: 30px;}
{margin: 10px 30px;}

Note: again this works the same for padding.

Background Property

{background-color: #000; background-image: url(image.jpg); background-position: left top; background-repeat: no-repeat;}
{background: #000 url(image.jpg) top left no-repeat;}

Border Property

{border-width: 2px; border-style: solid; border-color: #000;}
{border: 2px solid #000;}

Note: you can also use this short-hand CSS with border-top, border-right, border-left, and border-bottom.

{border-top: 2px; border-right: 5px; border-left: 10px; border-bottom: 3px;}
{border: 2px 5px 10px 3px;}

Note: You can also shorten this further like we did with the two value margin short-hand CSS. You can not combine the two border short-hands, if you wish for your border-left to have a different color/style than your border-right you must code separately.

{border-right: 2px solid #000;}
{border-bottom: 5px dashed #fff;}

GBuy - Google's very own online payment system

GoogleBuy is Google's very own Internet-payment service like Paypal.

Google has earlier offered hints that it might set up an online-payment service. The WSJ now confirms that Google is actually developing a Paypal rival service called GBuy (GoogleBuy).

For the past some time, Google has recruited online retailers to test GoogleBuy. GBuy will feature an icon posted alongside the paid-search ads of merchants, which Google hopes will tempt consumers to click on the ads. GBuy will also let consumers store their credit-card information on Google.

Google said that it has acknowledged publicly on many occasions that it is working on payment products. The company also said it already processes online payments for ad services, as well as fees from consumers who use features such as Google Store and Google Earth.

Promoting Your Blog Through Comments ?

Many bloggers use to leave comments in someone else's blog, forum to promote their blogs and to get a backlink to their blog. That's not a bad idea. If you post a comment on some article with a link back to your blog you may have a chance to get visitors from that back link. But between promotion, spamming is a fine line so here is a short list of things to keep in mind if you want to promote your blog using comments:

Comment Relative To The Post : I have seen a lot of people commenting off topic, they comments something that is not related to the article posted by the blog owner that sounds spammy.

Use Controversy Sparingly : While most people enjoy a good discussion based on interesting ideas really few of them likes stupid controversy. If you create controversy where none exists you may attract some traffic but few regular readers.

This short list is intended for blog promotion I think it will help many bloggers commenting out there.

Testing Adsense On Your Website ???

If you are testing your new website layout, you might be refreshing your website pages over and over again. And if these pages contain Google Ads, each time your refresh your page, you make a request to Google Ads Server for a new set of ads.

Certainly Google is unaware that you are testing your website and it might even penalize your account for "click-fraud" since the IP requesting ads remains same. And if in the worst-case scenario, you might accidently click on your own ads. And these extra "ad impressions" will also chance your CTR data.

One simple way to avoid this serious problem is to remove the Adsense code altogether from your page before testing. But this may not be the best solution as your Google Ads are an important part of your layout. So here are a few simple but effective workarounds:

1. Instead of using Adsense code, add a static graphic (jpg image) with the same dimesions as your adsense code.

2. Modify the value of google_ad_client to something like "pub-googleIamTesting"

3. Add another line to Google Adsense code google_adtest = "on"; Don't forget the semicolon.

4. Though there is no official comment, it is safer to remove the google_ad_channel variable.

Or contact Google Adsense Team with your query. Google folks are very quick to respond.

Google AdSense policies require that websites displaying Google ads be active and not under construction. When your site is complete and active, you may add the AdSense
ad code.
